My recent work

Well, I feel kind of bad because I haven't been posting on this blog all that much recently... really though, I'm not to sure if there's anyone even reading it.. but.. just incase.
I haven't been shoot to much lately as work has been getting in the way, hence why there hasn't been any recent posts. October seems like it's going to be a little busier with photography as I have some head shots booked, some family portrait sessions and a few personal work shots I would like to make. So to tide you over, here's some recent pieces I've done, which are more on the self portrait, fine art, conceptual side of things.

This first image I call " CAPTIVE HANDS " is a dark image I've had floating around in my brain for quite a while. As summer ends, and fall/winter start to come into frame, the days get darker, drearier and I get more and more depressed. I'm not a fan of the winter, even though I'm Canadian, which I'm sure is some sort of Canadian Sin, but I'm not. It's cold, and gets right into your bones, I don't ever want to leave the house, or my bed for that matter, and working out or any physical labor seems impossible which leads to weight gain... ugh.....
This image is representative of being depressed and the depression holding me back from life itself.

ESCAPING MIND

When I sit down to come up with concepts, sometimes my mind opens right up and it all comes flowing out. Other times, it's completely blank and I need to see something to give birth to a new idea. This image was one that came flowing out with no trouble at all. For anyone who has done some art history, you may know a painter by the name of RENE MAGRITTE and his famous painting, THE LOVERS. Something about that painting always intrigued me and ever since I saw it back in school, I've wanted to do something like it. My interpretation is the mind spilling out creative thoughts as I sit and think of images to create.

PASSION IN PICTURES

You never really feel like you've completed a photographic journey until you see your images in print, at least thats how I feel. From time to time, I'll take some of my favourite images and get them printed either on canvas or 11x14 gloss. I wanted to create an image with these images and myself displaying the images printed because I love seeing them come to life. This was a simple shot lighting wise.. there's a window camera left supplying the light for the imagery, and obviously this is a compostie image, meaning it's about 5 pictures all combined into one for the final result.

FALLING APPLES

On a beautiful fall day, out in the woods I decided to go for a walk through some trails. As i started out down the path always travelled, apples started raining down from the sky all around, with deep "THUDS" as they hit the ground. As the wind blew more apples fell and I knew instantly what picture I was going to take on this walk.
Once again this is a composite image of about 4 or 5 images, no lighting other than ambient light filtered through the clouds as it was an over cast day.

 STORY COMES TO LIFE

Books are a fantastic way to let your mind create imagery. Sometimes when I'm reading I really get caught up in it and get lost in a whole other world. I wanted this to look like the story was reaching out and pulling me into it... it was hard to get the right angle to make the arm look like it was coming out of the book. I actually had a different image in my head, but there's certain photoshop techniques I haven't mastered yet.
No lighting used in this image, except for the ambient light coming in through the large window in the kitchen.

UNFORGOTTEN

The woods is one of my favourite places to shoot. In the summer it's horrible due to black flies and mosquitos, but now that fall has arrived it's game on... as long as the rain stays away, and for this image it did! Lighting set up for this image is pretty simple, One SB-800 Speedlight firing at 1/8th power into a half opened 60" umbrella directly over head on a boom stand.

BURNT OUT IDEAS

Lately I've been in a rutt. I can't for the life of me come put with creative ideas. I've been looking at other conceptual photographers work, reading books, watching movies but nothing is clicking. Instead of giving up and getting upset about the issue, I had a thought " Why not use the problem as the answer ?". I can't come up with ideas... everyone thinks of an idea as a light bulb lighting up over peoples heads thanks to cartoons, so ... If I can't come up with ideas the light bulbs wouldn't be turned on.  I also love the fact that the light bulbs also represent ideas... not to often do you see ideas, well... you see them in your mind but other people don't, and this allows that to happen.

Lighting on this image: 1 SB-80DX firing at 1/16th power camera left into a half opened 60" umbrella, feathered off to the right of the frame so the light is just catching my left side.

Cowapolooza: THE MUSIC Pt. 2

Hope you had a chance to check out Part 1 of this blog which was focused on the first band of the night: AFTER THE LOUNGE. They are an amazing rock band!

Part 2 is all about THUNDERSTRUCK! Canada's best AC/DC cover band. Apparently they had played cowapolooza about 4 years about, but honestly, I didn't attend any of the Cowapolooza festivals until 2 years ago so I missed out, and I'm pretty bummed out that I didn't go earlier because i've been missing out. THUNDERSTRUCK is simply outstanding! They look the part and definitely do AC/DC justice. I've always wanted to see AC/DC live, but now they don't tour anymore.. well, accept in Australia but I don't have any plans on going there .. yet. Thunderstruck just blew my mind with how dead on they are with their covers, their outfits and their stage presents!

If you ever get the chance to see these guys play in a city, town, village near you, GO!!!! If you love AC/DC then you will love Thunderstruck because they are the next best thing.

Cowapolooza Festival: THE MUSIC Pt.1

A beautiful, warm summer night in August, the sun is setting, the stage is up, people are buzzing all around. Guitars squealing, drums pounding, bass rattling chests and vocals blaring in your ears.

This was the experience you had if you were in Woodstock Ontario, Canada on Friday August 16th 2013. Cowapolooza is a festival that Woodstock puts on every year, full of music, vendors of all sorts, buskers, and small rides for the kids. Held in South Side Park, hundreds of people gather to experience this two day event, and as you can guess, the bands are what drive me to attend each year. In the past we've had acts such as: April Wine, The Stampeders, Thunderstruck ( Canada's best AC/DC cover band), and The Beagles ( A Beatles cover band ). This year Thunderstruck came back to join us and rock out the best AC/DC covers I've ever heard... a band that definitely doesn't disappoint and leaves you wanting more, as well as the band After The Lounge, London Ontario's favourite rock band with an original sound that grabs you hard and blows you away.

I suggest you check out both of these bands and get to a show near you to get the full experience.

THUNDERSTRUCK: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Thunderstruck/16277603667

Facebook was the only webpage I could find on these guys but they're from Toronto and just blew me away with their covers... they are dead on and have an amazing stage presence.

this blog Pt. 1 ... are the images of AFTER THE LOUNGE.
i'm still editing Thunderstrucks images, but they will be posted ASAP.

2013 FireFighter Fit Challenge

I've never seen so many pretty ladies gathered together at an event in my life!

This weekend ( Aug 9,10,11th) was the Ingersoll Ontario 2013 FireFighter Fit Challenge. This is an event where Firefighters, men and women, gather to run a course which show cases how physically fit they are, and have to be to do their job. I may not name the sections of the course correctly but it starts out with: A run up 5 flights of stairs in full gear, then at the top, they do a hand over hand pull of rolled up hose to the top of the tower. After that, they run back down 5 flights of stairs. Once at the bottom they have to bleed their oxygen tank, and switch tanks onto another firefighters back. Firefighter number two then jumps onto a Hammer Shuttle and beats a big steel block from one end to the other, then takes off running, weaving around fake fire hydrants. They then pick up a fire hose, throw it over their shoulder, and run back down the course to a target where they then have to blast the hose at the target and knock it down. Once the target has been knocked down they pick up a 175lbs dummy and drag it all the way back down the course across the finish line.

This event was pretty sweet to watch take place and it really makes you realize how in shape these firefighters really are.

Zebras, Elephants, Tigers and Bears Oh My!

When you wake up on a Sunday morning, knowing that you have no plans for the day, and the following day you have to go back to a hot sweaty factory job you hate.... what do you do? You hit up the Toronto Ontario Zoo!

Time was not wasted today, up at 8am on the road by 8:30. It takes about 2 hours to get to the zoo and little did I know it was going to be PACKED! took about 35 mins waiting in line to get my ticket into the zoo and there were people everywhere, but really, it was a great day for it 25 degrees, pure sun, not a cloud in the sky! The Toronto zoo is pretty big.. it takes probably 3 hours to walk the entire thing. I didn't spend as much time at each display as I would have liked but that was mainly due to the amount of people and the fact that it was so warm out a lot of the animals were just laying around, but I did the best I could to get some good images.
My plan for some of these, which I'm not sure will work or not, is to use some of the images of the animals in pictures with some models. Composites are something I love to do with photography, so I'm hoping in the future I can pull some of these off.

Here's some of the images I shot today on my little safari:

Miss ATL Bikini Competition 2013

Women, Bikini's, Motorcycles, Beer and Bands! Oh my!

All of the above where what you could see when you walked onto the property of Rocky's Harley Davidson in London Ontario. I had the amazing pleasure of photographing the MISS ATL 2013 Bikini Contest, which was quite a show! Last years winner, this years host, Kristen McCord had told me about the event and instantly I was hooked on the idea of showing up on this saturday to make some pictures happen.

Not only did I enjoy being surrounded by beautiful women in bikini's, I also was able to meet Jim Kelly, radio personality on FM96 as well as the guys in the band After The Lounge, which is what the ATL stands for in the Miss ATL bikini contest! It was a very hot day, but the crowed didn't seem to mind the heat.... and the beer tent hahah.

I started out the day walking around, photographing the UWO (University of Western Ontario) ladies run their bike wash as well as some of the bands on stage providing some rock while we waited for the bikini comp to start. The turn out was pretty awesome and bigger than last year from what I understood. Oh and did I mention that this event was FREE!, yep, free! I went to the bank before I drove to London thinking that I was going to need $10 minimum to get in, when I showed up.. I walked in free of charge.

This is a yearly event, a lot of fun, great music, there's food available, Beer tent, and for all the parents out there, if you can't find a baby sitter, no worries, they even had a bouncy castle set up for the littles! so next year, if you don't have anything to do I would suggest making it out to Rocky's Harley Davidson in London for the MISS ATL BIKINI CONTEST.

3 Car Collision

Not to many people know this, but, one of my favourite things to photograph are accidents and fires. I know it sounds a little weird, I never photograph the injured only the wreckage.

A boring friday night sitting at home with nothing to do, thinking I was just going to spend the night watching a few movies, when all of a sudden I heard sirens wailing through the city. I checked with my sources and found out what was going on in a hurry. A 3 car collision near the Toyota Plant in Woodstock with two cars on fire was the issue, so I grabbed my camera, which is always set up and ready to go, jumped in the car and took off to the location. Luckily there was a side road right near the accident that had a dead end so I could get up nice and close without being a disturbance to the emergency services. Unfortunately, right as I pulled up the firefighters blasted the cars with water and immediately put the fire out, which stopped me from being able to capture the blaze.

Firefighters surrounded the cars adding more water, opening doors and cutting pieces of the hood off the one vehicle while medics brought some of the crash victims into the back of the ambulance to check them over. Police pulled up and blocked off the roads and started to redirect traffic. I don't know what it is about accidents but it gets my heart pumping, I've always wanted to be a paramedic but just couldn't seem to get through the schooling to make it, so .... I guess photographing the accidents will hold me over.

LAKE ERIE PHOTO TOUR

What does a photographer do when he's bored on vacation?
He calls a photographer/friend, gets in the car and drives all day from one point on Lake Erie to another!

Todays photo tour started in Port Rowan Ontario and travelled all the way down lake Erie to Port Stanley Ontario. In between we ( My buddy JMAC and Myself) hit all the little ports such as: Port Bruce, Long Point, Turkey Point, Port Burwell... etc. With nothing specific in mind, we just drove around and kept our eyes peeled for images. After 400Kms you'd think we would have found a lot of pictures to make, but in all honesty... we didn't really find much out there, which was kind of disappointing. However, we did have amazing Banana Milk Shakes at TWINS ICE CREAM SHOP in Port Rowan ( Highly Suggested if you're ever in the area) and an amazing Chicken Caesar Wrap at THE LUNCHBOX in Port Burwell ( Also extremely suggested if you're there, the food is outstanding and the employees are so kind and welcoming).

After this long day of driving, hiking and photo making, I came home, loaded the images and started to edit. It wasn't a total loss, I found that I had shot a few good frames...

Canada Day Celebration!

Yesterday, July 1st, was Canada's 146th birthday, and with every birthday us Canucks throw a big party for our Country! My little hometown has a pretty nice park where the celebration takes place every year. I went down to see what kinds of things were going on, there were: Softball games going on, fire trucks for the kids to go in/on, talent shows, live music, and some kiddy rides. Normally I'd spend some time down there and photograph some of the events, but this year I showed up at the wrong time and everything was in between acts or games so there wasn't much to shoot.

At night. 9:45pm to be exact, the fire works display started. I was a little worried we wern't going to get to see them this year because at 9:00pm it was pouring rain, but mother nature was nice and stopped the rain just in time for the fire works to take place. Every year I head up to the same hill and get the same pictures of the fire works, so this year I wanted to change it up and find a new location with a little more in the image than just the fire works. I left early and went up to the highest point in the town but the road was closed for construction so that wrecked those plans. Instead I decided to head up to another high point where I could get some houses in the foreground.. my initial thought was to get up so high I could have all the city lights in the foreground, but this would have to do. In some of the images you can see some kids running around with sparklers, which just look like long streaks of light because of the long shutter speeds required to capture the fireworks. There are also a few pictures where you can see some people standing down in the bottom of the photograph in silhouette lit by the light from the houses.

St.Thomas Ontario Air Show

It's Canada Day weekend for us Canuck's! In St.Thomas Ontario, the air show was underway. Weather was not looking so good first thing in the morning so I wasn't to sure if I'd be attending or not, but as the afternoon came, the clouds broke up and the sun came out. I couldn't resist, as i'm an airplane fanatic, I had to drive the hour to St.Thomas and see this show.

I didn't want to pay to go to the show as I had already paid the $30 to go to two other air shows a few weeks before. I found street behind the airport that wasn't surrounded by police kicking everyone off the side of the roads. Luckily enough, the spot I picked was the direct line the planes were using to circle around the airport, so they all flew directly over head, which made for great shots.

Sitting in the car a heard a scream from some engines and as I looked up, out shot the snowbirds. It was weird because the snowbirds usually end the air show, not start them up, but it was a great new approach, a surprise, and really a great way to start the show.

Anyways, it was a great day, there were a lot of people, the weather held up and it was great to once again smell the jet fuel burning in the air.

New Website!

well, it's here! finally a home for my work, no more facebook and flickr... although I will still be posting to those social media sites, but this will be just the best of my work. Photography is my passion and really it's the only thing in my life that feels right at this time, so it's only fitting that I pay it some attention and love.
